Supporting Greater Manchester’s ambition to end homelessness

GMHP members have worked closely with the GM Mayor to achieve his ambition to end homelessness and rough sleeping across the GM City Region. Our Housing First initiative has seen our members provide over 200 homes over the past three years to vulnerable young people who otherwise would be homeless.

Andy Burnham’s visit to Great Places’ award-winning Docherty Project highlighted the vital role housing providers play in supporting people experiencing homelessness and complex needs.

The specialist scheme provides safe accommodation and tailored support for people experiencing homelessness alongside alcohol dependency, helping individuals rebuild stability, improve wellbeing and move towards independent living. The visit demonstrated how housing, health and support services can work together to deliver better outcomes for residents and communities.

As one of the country’s few specialist alcohol harm-reduction services, The Docherty Project’s innovative, person-centred approach helps to prevent homelessness, improve health and reduce pressure on public services.

This work aligns closely with GMHP’s wider ambition to ensure everyone has access to a safe, secure and appropriate home. Through partnerships with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, NHS Greater Manchester and local authorities, housing providers across the City Region continue to play a vital role in tackling homelessness, supporting healthier communities and helping more people live well and independently.

Tackling homelessness is one of the greatest challenges we face, and it requires both compassion and practical solutions. The Docherty Project demonstrates the impact of combining safe housing with specialist support. This approach gives people a stable foundation and the opportunity to rebuild their lives, breaking the cycle of homelessness.
